TL;DR:
Its snowing in the mountains, storm total could reach up to 18" in the cottonwoods. The precipitation could continue into Thursday and another storm is building for the start of next week.
Nowcast:
Up in the canyons it is dumping snow with temperatures down in the low 20's. The brunt of the storm will be throughout today but will continue into tomorrow and will move out of the area Thursday evening. We are seeing snow down in the valley which should continue throughout today bringing an inch or two of snow.
Short Term:
As this storm moves out of the area on Thursday night we will see a period dryness but the NW flow could bring some more moisture Friday night into Saturday with potential for another small snow event. 700 mb temps will remain below freezing making moisture the only limiting factor. With strong NW flow the lake could provide some enhancement bringing another quick refresher before the next big storm at the start of next week.
Long Term:
The cherry on top of all of this snow is that the active pattern we've been seeing is showing no clear signs of stopping. The GFS is showing large scale troughs frequently impacting the Western US throughout its 240hr forecast period. The same story is shown in the European models as well. This is great news from both a snow standpoint but maybe more importantly an avalanche standpoint. More snow helps insulate this early season snow and makes development of depth hoar less likely. Two thumbs up from our end.
If you're traveling in the backcountry be aware avalanche conditions already do exist. Visit Utah Avalanche Center for all your backcountry needs.
