Welcome Back

Utah Ski Weather is back and we are stoked for the coming season! With a strong start to the season already we are excited to continue forecasting the greatest snow on earth. Give us a follow on twitter for updates and new forecast!

TL;DR:

Wednesday and Thursday we will see snow in the mountains and maybe in the foothills, totals could be anywhere from 5-13"

Nowcast:

Currently up in the canyons temperatures are in the upper 30's to low 40's at the mountain bases and just below freezing up on mountain ridges. There are weak winds coming out of the south.

Short term:

An upper level trough is on the precipice of Utah and should move into the area Wednesday bringing with it strong southwesterly flow accompanied by a healthy dose of moister from the west coast. This trough will bring with it a cold front dropping freezing levels  to around 800 mb indicating snow likely in the canyons and potentially in the foothills. The models are currently displaying a wide range of snow totals and suggest we may see 5-13" in the mountains with 0.4-0.8" of water. Following the frontal passage the 700 mb winds will shift to a more NW flow providing some potential for lake effect snow Thursday.

Long term:

As we move into the weekend another upper level trough is setting up to bring some more precipitation early next week. The trough could dig deep and inject lots of moisture into Utah in a similar fashion to the storm we will see this week. Keep your fingers crossed, wax your skis, put your socks on inside out, and a spoon under your pillow. Ski season is here and the progressive weather pattern we have experienced so far is looking to hold up.

As usual, if you are going to be traveling in the backcountry have the proper equipment and read the avalanche forecast from the Utah Avalanche Center
