TL;DR:
Cold temperatures will remain through the weekend bringing light flurries and things are looking promising as another storm builds for early next week.
Nowcast:
Unfortunately yesterday's storm is moving out of the area slightly early and with it the snow has stopped. Alta is reporting a total of 12" from this storm with one inch of SWE. As the upper level trough moves over Utah temperatures have dropped significantly to the teens and at the mountain tops is even dipping down to as low as eight degrees. Throughout the day today it will be overcast with a chance for some scattered flurries. Accumulation of snow won't be more than one more inch.
Short Term:
Over the next couple of days we will see cold temperatures along with scattered snow here and there. As the upper level trough that is settled over us currently moves east we will be sitting under a ridge until Monday, yet as a result of the ridge orientation strong NW flow will bring some moisture to help the light weekend snow continue. Temperatures will remain bellow freezing.
Long Term:
As we move into next week another larger storm is looking promising. Following this weekend's ridge a strong trough is digging deep off of the west coast. Like the storm from Wednesday strong SW flow could inject lots of moisture into Utah causing some favorable snow conditions. Although it is too early to say how much snow next weeks storm could bring this storm is looking very similar to this weeks and could behave as such. As we mentioned yesterday we are in a very progressive weather pattern resulting in some consistent storms moving throught the start of November.
As seen in the image above valid next Tuesday, we are seeing high wave numbers that are conducive to a very progressive planetary scale pattern. Source: UofU Atmos |
If you are planning on traveling in the backcountry have the proper equipment and knowledge, although it may be the early season, if there is enough snow to ski then there is enough snow to avalanche. Read the avalanche forecast from our friends over at the Utah Avalanche Center where you can find all things avalanche.
