The Powder Just Keeps Coming

TL;DR:

Snow will continue and temperatures remain cold. The snow will continue through the week and clear up for some epic bluebird days this weekend.

Nowcast:

It is cold and snowy today with mid-mountain temps around 9°F and the top of Collins at Alta is around 7°F. Alta has picked up almost a foot and a half of snow in the past 24 hours. The accumulation should slow down as the day goes on with some spot snow showers this afternoon and into tonight. There is currently a winter weather warning for the Salt Lake Valley and the Wasatch. If you are planning on going up today make all necessary precautions before heading up the canyons.

Short Term:

Over the next couple of days, it will continue to snow on and off with little accumulation in the mountains. It will remain cold with highs being around 15°F at the base.

Long Term:

This weekend looks amazing for some shredding.  This very active system that we find ourselves in this week looks to be moving out by Saturday morning. This will leave us with mostly clear skies and plenty of powder to go around. Next week, a large trough looks to dig itself into our area late Wednesday and into Friday morning. This could bring us more snow late next week and possibly a white Christmas.

Backcountry Comments:

The largest concern for avalanches in the backcountry is persistent weak layers. With the new snow we have gotten is low density and light, there is still a weak layer under all that new snow from the storms we had last week and the week before.
